the myth of no myth

The myth that some propose, as enlightened vanguards of a new humanity if only others would follow, that matter is what matters and that the scientific method is not just a method but a conceptual system of consciousness to be adopted, this myth of no myth in which one bravely stands naked and unadorned in a ratio-nal material universe with homo sapiens as the apex of wisdom, cherries atop the cosmic malt, is, as myths go, akin to diving into the shallowest part of the pool.

We humans are story tellers, myth makers, connoisseurs of explanatory tales. Tales which in turn create who we are. Each of us lives a story of our own devising (with a little help from our friends) and do our best every day to live it faithfully and truly. We are mythologists. We are mythical creatures. We love story.

The myth of no myth has been on the menu for centuries. Few order it, preferring a richer diet. I'm glad it's there. It's a good cleansing agent. Blessings to those who adopt it as a life style. Some do it quietly. Some are like fresh vegan converts, proclaiming loudly and with missionary zeal the benefits of their new eating habits while denouncing the foraging of others.

"Adopt the myth of no myth! It's good for you!"

Maybe so, but I think it's not going to happen.

  1. The mind loves stories. Stories can teach, but they also distract. Look at the stories everyday on the news. Do they teach or do they distract us from what's really going on?

The scientific method tells us how something works. It's a way of discovering how the world or reality really works. Science is a tool of the mind. Science can not go beyond the mind. Science has yet to explain how we go from George to Buddha in the same person.

What is amazing. What is a miracle, is that this clever species of ape has spread all over the world and hasn't managed to kill itself off yet from its own cleverness. We think we are intelligent, yet an intelligent species would not do some of the dumb things we are doing like polluting our oceans to save a few pieces of paper or make millions of people homeless for the same reason. White collar thieves are held up as virtuous and smart, when they are nothing of the sort. Stories are spun daily to explain why things went wrong that have no actual basis in reality and supposedly smart people have no knowledge of how they wrecked lives and destroyed firms.

Stories are wondrous tales. They can be used for good or ill. They can inspire or mislead and misdirect. Unfortunately, a lot of stories these days do the latter. We could do without such tales because they are leading a lot of us down a false path that is unreal. People followed Hitler because of his false stories and he led a whole country to ruin because they believed him in spite of the world falling apart around him and them. One must choose one's prophets and leaders wisely. Perhaps, it's better not to follow any one, and find one's own way.

  2. We always have a choice
    Of stories we choose
Science stories tell us what we can observe
    Typical news and pundit stories
    Tell of fear and anger
    Most imply superiority

    But we can choose stories
    Of humility
    Of love
    Of compassion
And grow with each story. LG

  3. Given the relationship that exists among each of us, the Source, and one another, reality is affected by the myths we breathe in and the myths we breathe out.

We need to all craft the best myths we can and breathe them into every action that we take; Myths of light and love and presence, and then watch them unfold.

  4. Myths are extended symbols, and our brains must utilize symbols so that energy becomes comprehensible, explainable. Neuroscience is proving this again and again with its advances in understanding brain behavior.

(My favorite examples come from Near-Death Experience research where, often, Christians cross over and see Jesus while Buddhists see Buddha and many others see energy in its more raw form, as light. In other words, our minds translate energy into what will be meaningful for us to experience.)

So, if you buy into this "myth-symbol-energy-brainwave" pattern, the days of "no myth" are certainly numbered.
